Brownsea Island

Planning Your Perfect Dorset Holiday

About Brownsea Island

Set within the sheltered waters of Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island is a peaceful wildlife haven filled with woodland, heathland, lagoons and beautiful coastal views. Reached by ferry from Poole Quay, the journey across the harbour adds an extra sense of adventure before you even step ashore.

The island is especially famous for its rare red squirrels and is considered one of their largest and safest remaining strongholds in southern England. As you explore the woodland trails, keep watch among the treetops and forest floor, particularly during the quieter parts of the day.

Brownsea’s varied habitats also support an impressive range of birdlife. The internationally important lagoon, managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust, attracts wading and nesting birds throughout the year, while hides provide peaceful places to stop and observe the wildlife.
